DON’T get me wrong, I’ve bagged a few Munros in my time. And I’m no stranger to the Alps, Dolomites or even the peaks of remote Patagonia.

But all that strenuous exercise was at least a decade ago, and before I broke both the tibia and fibula in my ankle last year, and so it was with a fair degree of trepidation that I packed the old walking boots and headed off to Bavaria with the other half.
